Recently, I noticed an incredible improvement in my search ranking as a result of studying GWT (now Google Search Console), discovering new good keywords and tweaking my articles for better results.

Keyword research is the most important and crucial step in any successful online campaign. While some users have opted to ignore Google natural traffic, I think it’s still important to know what’s in searchers’ mind each time they use Google.

How to get good keywords from gwt – Impressions and low clicks

Impressions are simply the number of times your entries show up on search engine result page. From your GWT, you find out that some keywords generate more impressions and low clicks. What’s the possible explanation?

Look at my example below. The keyword “Make Money blogging” generates over 1000k impressions and 1 clicks to 1 url during the last 30 days.

There is a simple reason for the low clicks – My entries don’t show up on Google page #1. According to this report, the average position on Google search result where my entry is found is 53, that’s from page #5.

With this information, I may want to do some more tweaking on this article – analyze competitor strength, add more materials to the article, more LSI keywords, build more backlinks and social signals, make the title and description more attractive, etc

The keyword atomic email hunter gets 282 impressions. That puts me on position 20+ with 1 click.

Now, I think these keywords are easy to rank on Google. Sometimes we run after popular keywords that are quite hard to rank for.

We can do better tweaking and trying to rank for these little known phrases. They are they low hanging fruits. You can easily do some optimization and shoot yourself to page 1.

From the example above, I can easily optimize the blog post that gets ranked for the keyword atomic email hunter and move up to page 1.

These are absolutely good keywords because I’m already getting some exposure from them. For the most part, the articles ranked were not originally optimized for these keywords. GWT is just being awesome by helping us discover what’s working for us.

Bottom line …

It’s possible to use Google Webmaster Tools as a free keyword tool to improve your search engine rankings.  How do you use this tool exactly?

  • Get the keywords that generates the highest number of impressions with low clicks
  • Get the pages with these high impressions and low clicks
  • Tweak these pages to improve ranking and attract more clicks.

Follow these steps;

Logon to your GSC account and click Search Results on the left menu. On the page that follows, click the “Impressions” tab to show by descending order – from the highest to the lowest.

To see the pages that show up on search result pages for each keyword, click the keyword in question.

Being Relevant and Authoritative- Google Ranking factors that really matter

Google has the famous 200 ranking factors in their secret algo.

Want to know the real truth?

They have many, MANY more than that. Each ranking factor has dozens of variations that play out in different scenarios, so in reality, Google has more than 10 000 ranking factors.

So it’s impossible for you or anyone else to cover all of them (nor is it really necessary).

So, what to do then?

Well, all those ranking factors are divided into two batches:

  • Relevance
  • Authority

Really, that’s it.

If you can make your article hyper-relevant to Google for the keyword you’re targeting, and if you have at least some authority to you site’s name, you will rank for at least some keyword phrases.

And you know what- that’s a great start for you.

Because, once you start getting that initial traffic, Google suddenly starts to rank you much faster, and you finally earn a bit of money from your affiliate links.

And then you invest that money and you’re on your way to success.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Relevance and authority; very easy stuff to boost, and here’s how.

#1- Relevance- Do your on-page perfectly

And by perfectly I mean follow Yoast plugin’s suggestions.

Just to be clear- I don’t think Yoast is perfect and you don’t need to have all green lights to rank.

To be honest, I never pay attention to it, and it hasn’t stopped me one bit.

However, if you’re a newbie it pays to pay attention because their recommendations are solid and following them will make your site more relevant to Google, thus you’ll be ranking much easier.

Now, let’s break it down real quick.

How to optimize an article with Yoast SEO plugin

For this tutorial, We’ll use my Wealthy Affiliate Review.

Enstine is a member so he knows what Wealthy Affiliate is, but in case you don’t know, they’re a training center for newbie affiliates. They can teach you how to start, build and monetize an affiliate site.

Before we begin you need to specify a target key phrase for the article. For my article the target keyword is “Wealthy Affiliate Review”

Yoast good results

#1- External and internal links

External followed links help Google see what your article is relevant to. So link out abundantly and always stay on topic.

Internal links send authority and relevance to other parts of the site. Make sure you have a couple in every post.

#2- Keyphrase and meta description length

Keyphrase length is basic stuff- is your keyword something people actively search for?

If it is- you’re set.

Meta description length is whether your meta d. is over 160 characters long. If it is not, good. It won’t be cut off in the SERPS.

Also, have your keyword in the meta description. Because Google will bold it in the search when people search for the exact phrase..

#3- Previously used keyphrase

This is important because of keyword cannibalization You want to have only one article on your site targeting a specific keyword.

If you have two targeting the same phrase, Google will be confused and probably filter both.

#4- Keyphrase in subheading

Each subheading is your way to reinforce the topic of the article. In my case, each subheading has the words “Wealthy Affiliate” in it. That is great as it lets Google know that my post is about WA.

#5- Image alt attributes

The image alt attribute is an easy way for you to sneak in a few extra keywords. Just make sure that you also describe the image; and also that you don’t keyword stuff.

Because Google’s algo is really smart and can see that you’re stuffing keywords.

Then you’ll be penalized.

#6-Text length

Yoast recommends above 300 words per post and I agree. Unless the article really requires you to go brief for example “when was Michael Jackson born”?

You should go all out and try to give a definite answer to the searcher’s query.

#7- Keyphrase in the title and SEO title width

Keyword in SEO title is the number one on-page SEO factor. Get it right with a well placed keyword and get an immediate and large boost.

And make sure your SEO title is less than 60 characters long. Then your result will be shown in full and won’t be cut off.

#8- keyphrase in slug

Keyword in URL is a weak ranking signal for Google. Make sure you have it, not so much for the ranking benefits, but because it is a strong relevancy signal. A high-level sign that explicitly tells Google your page is about “X keyword”

In my case the keyword is “Wealthy Affiliate Review”, so my slug is simply wealthy-affiliate-review.

Things I messed up

Yoast Bad Results

#1- Keyphrase in the introduction

Keyword in the first 100 words is a strong signal to Google what your page is about. And it makes sense when you think about it.

It’d be weird to write an article about, for example, internal linking and only mention internal links in the word 2000.

Still, don’t expect miracles to happen and this mistake won’t cost you dearly.

#2- Keyword density

This is an outdated metric. Keyword density doesn’t matter. What matters is that you don’t stuff keywords, but have them fit naturally throughout your post.

#3- Keypharse in the meta description

Like I mentioned earlier keyword in the meta description is not a ranking factor, but when the searcher looks for something in Google, if you have the keyword in your description it’ll be shown in bold thus increasing your CTR.

That’s what makes meta description valuable to you.

#2- Authority-How to boost you site’s strength for free

The other big part of the ranking equation is funneling authority to a brand new affiliate site.

I want to show you two methods that are insanely easy and newbie-friendly, and most important of all- free.

Why just two?

Because link building is  demanding stuff, both mentally and mechanically as you’ll need to send a tonne of emails.

Don’t want you to burn out and feel overwhelmed.

Link to influencers and let them know about it

This one is my favorite. It’s the tactic that got me my first real white hat links and the one that eased me into the exciting, but difficult world of link building.

What is it?

Oh, it’s simple,

You write an article on your site or you guest post somewhere, and then within the article, you link to select choice of influencers.

And then you let them know about it. Simple as that. And effective too.

Why does it work?

It works because professional bloggers know that links are everything when it comes to ranking highly. If you don’t have links, you are not going to rank.

So when they see you linking to them out of the blue, they ARE going to remember you, and they ARE going to return the favor sometimes in the future.

But remember this, and it’s crucial- this is not a tit-for-tat game.

Don’t expect to link to someone, and then immediately get a link in return.

It doesn’t work like that.

Instead, expects to spend several months:

  • linking to them
  • sharing their stuff; engaging on Twitter and Facebook,
  • commenting on their blogs.

Remember– you’re building blogger bonds that’ll serve you far beyond getting a single backlink to your site.

You’re helping others succeed so you can succeed too, and backlinks are a by-product of you co-operating with fellow bloggers

It’s great to get your beak wet into link building because you can score some easy links.

So, you click and respond and you’re rewarded with a a sweet homepage link from a powerful domain.

Easy peasy, and totally white hat.

Note: the one thing you must know about doing SEO with no money

You CAN do SEO with a $0 budget, but you need to realize that your success will come from 3 intertwined factors.

These are:

  • Article volume. You will need to bulk up your site quite a bit and thus build topical authority in Google
  • Article quality– All articles will need to be well written and answer search intent completely
  • Link foundation– you don’t need a tonne of links to rank for long tail keywords, but you will need some. So please don’t focus on content only and eschew link building completely. It will bite you in the ass if you do.

And there’s a fourth factor I left for last:

Time.

Yes, with the passage of time, as your site and content matures you will see your rankings naturally improve. That’s normal as the longer a site is indexed, the more Google inherently trust it.

(Because spammers tend to fizzle out on their own rather quickly)

Of course, age alone is not enough to rank, but content quality and quantity combined with the smart link building I talked about here will give you the results you want.

And once you start ranking and are earning a steady income, push that money back in your business.

Investing in your business is the best thing you can do early on.

For example, you could get Ahrefs for backlink research. Over time you will be able to build links quicker and better because now you will have a premium tool to work with.

Or you can invest in SEMRush, for proper keyword research. Choosing the right keywords is a prerequisite for any ranking success in Google.

Of course, SemRush is much more that just a simple keyword tool I won’t talk about it here because I know Enstine has a whole guide dedicated to it.

Take a look:

Conclusion- bare bones SEO is better than no SEO at all; and better than waiting around

It really is.

Don’t wait until you have money to invest. It will likely never happen for you and you’re just deluding yourself and finding excuses.

Instead, be proactive and start doing what you can, right now.

And simple and effective steps I’ve shown you today will get you far, that’s a promise.

3 ways to Filter out Internal Traffic from Google Analytics (and Why You Should)

Google Analytics is one boon of a tool for us internet marketers.

It helps us:

And it helps us keep track of what truly matters for every online business:

  • Customer satisfaction
  • ROI (return on investment)
  • ROT (Return on Time)

With so much reliance on it, it is crucial that the data it gives is correct! (You agree?)

And it is. I really can’t complain as it takes note of everyone down to the last visitor. And I mean everyone, including yours truly internet marketer/SEO- Nikola Roza.

I didn’t want that, so I excluded myself from the ever-watching eye of Google Analytics.

“Good for you, but that doesn’t help me one iota”?

But this article will:-)

Let’s go!

What’s an IP Address? And Why Should You Care?

Your IP (internet protocol) address is the Id of your computer.

It’s a unique public address pointing to the router (the box) connecting you to the internet.

As such, it follows you wherever you go and leaves a trail of breadcrumbs (data) for us marketers to track.

Data that help marketers grow in profit by understanding better:

  • Who?
  • When?
  • Why?
  • What?
  • How long?

For example, you’re on Enstine’s site now, and his analytics is showering him with all kind of useful data:

  • Is this your first time here?
  • What page you’re on?
  • How long is your dwell time?
  • Where’re you from (country, area, and language)?
  • Did you click-through; or bounce?

And this just scratches the surface. There’s so much more to look at in the analytics report.

I imagine this sounds creepy to you but it’s the way internet works.

And it has been like that from the beginning.

So, tracking folks is nothing new, except that now the tools we use are much more sophisticated.

The good news that in the analytics data you’re a visitor number X and not a visitor “input your name please” 😉

Two Types of IP Addresses exist

  • IP4- looks like this 182.152.0.205- 32bit in size
  • IP6- looks like this 2521:292:c121:8a5::348e- 128bit in size

IP4’s are the standard common and 95% of all internet users have this type. IP6 is a new technology, the new schema developed to support the growing number of users.

Human population is increasing steadily, but the number of desktop computers laptops, and smartphones is increasing rapidly- and each device has its own and unique IP address.

That’s a lot of new users, a lot of new data.  And that is why the future belongs to the IP6’s.

With the Pleasantries Out of the Way- Now Onto the Process Itself (Filtering ip adresses)

First, you need to know your IP address.

The easiest way to check it is to type in Google”what’s my ip”. It will show you something like this:

Note– Depending on where you live you might see your numbers in a different layout. Sometimes instead of 12 digits, you can have 10. That’s normal- roll with it.

Also, you might have IP6, which it is a completely different layout of numbers, but the process stays the same.

Here are the steps:

  • Log into your Google Analytics
  • In the main dashboard choose “Admin”.
  • On the right-hand side, there is a “View” column- Find the “Filter” tab.
  • Click “Add Filter”.

  • Name it. Mine boasts the name “Home IP”
  • Chose “Predefined Filter Type”.
  • In the three boxes below set to: “Exclude”, “Traffic From the IP Adress”, “That is Equal to”
  • Paste your IP address
  • Save

That is all folks, phew!- Now go treat yourself to something nice 😀

How to Check if it Worked?

Return to the main analytics dashboard and go to the “reporting” tab. From there click “real-time” and “overview”.

Now visit Google and click on your site. If a new user pops up in your analytics, then it didn’t work and you have to repeat the steps from the above.

But first- try again.

It’s a bit far fetched but it could be that at that EXACT moment someone else landed on your site.

Remember:

If it worked then you wouldn’t be counted at all, but that other visitor would. And you can’t tell the exact person who visited so there’s no “oh it’s Bob from England, my regular visitor”.

If the visitor count didn’t increase, then it went just fine.

From now on the numbers REALLY won’t lie. 😉

This Method is Easy and it Works. But it isn’t Perfect

IP addresses can be static and dynamic.

Static:

By filtering traffic from the static address you can solve the problem permanently (they’re static so they never change).

Dynamic:

They often change on their own and filtering them is not so straightforward. That is because with every switch there’s a new set of numbers and your filter no longer catches anything.

My recommendation is to set a reminder one month from now to check if the numbers are the same. That way you can be proactive about it and still get accurate data from Google analytics.

Who has which IP address?

  • Dynamic- Most households and small businesses (most folks really)
  • Static- Large business

Keep in mind that this filter will not work retroactively. Your past reports will still be skewed and you’ll have to wait for fresh data to make comparisons.

Finally, analytics will only filter your home’s IP address. That means if you visit your site from another computer (in a different location ) you’ll still be recorded as a unique visitor.

Bonus- two more ways to filter your ip address from Google

Originally, this was where the article ended. All that’s left is to conclude…

However as I was reading the draft I felt that it’s incomplete and that I shoudd add at leas one more way to filter internal traffic…

So here are two more!

#2. How to exclude internal traffic with Google Analytics WP Plugin

For this to work you need to have installed the Google Analytics WP plugin.

Then in your WordPress dashboard, find the Google Analytics tab and click on “tracking:

There just select “administrator” and save your changes.

That’s it! You’ll be left out of the report from now on.

This method is extremely simple and fast, but the downside is that you need to be using this plugin.

Nothing wrong with that but I know many folks use a different analytics plugin, or nothing at all.

The choice is yours!

#3. Filter internal traffic with Google Analytics Opt-out add on

This is an add-on you can add to Chrome and other browsers that’ll prevent you being recorded anywhere on the web (by GA).

This is a drastic approach because you’d be filtering yourself from the web, It won’t hurt you at all, but other bloggers won’t see you in their analytics report.

And this is bad… why?

All newbie bloggers enjoy to see someone visit their site and consume their content. As a former beginner blogger, I attest to that.

So it’s a pretty selfish thing to hide yourself from them.

Use it as a last resort.

Conclusion- Should you exclude your IP from Google Analytics?

Yes– if you’re a small business owner and not getting huge traffic.

It can help you determine whether you’re getting any real visitors, what is working and what is not. Then you can refine your SEO campaigns, do AB testing and a whole bunch of other useful stuff too.

No– if you are getting 500+ unique visitors per day. Then you needn’t bother as there won’t be any significant difference to draw conclusions from.

Finally, Make this an obsolete knowledge for you. Make it so you don’t need to filter yourself out of Google Analytics. Because you’re getting so much visitors that you as a traffic source blend in.

Create an online business based on affiliate marketing!

What’s Pogo-sticking in SEO?

Pogo sticking in SEO is a situation where a user performs a search, clicks on a result and very quickly clicks back to the search result page, and clicks on a different result.

What this means is like the searcher telling Google “well, I’m disappointed in you. You told me this is what I’m looking for but it’s far from it”

Of course, a negative signal is sent to Google and that makes it think it made a mistake by ranking you on top because you just failed to satisfy the searcher.

If this happens over and over again, Google will seriously consider shifting you down stairs. (Well, Google here represents search engines).

You may get all the tough high PR backlinks and the keyword stuffs to get to position #1 but once searchers start rejecting your content by clicking back to the next entry on SERP, Google is smart enough to think something is seriously wrong with your content.

Given that search engines strive to satisfy their users, you’ll soon find your entries moving down to the bottom.

How do you measure your Pogo Sticking Effect?

Well, I have not seen any tool yet to measure your pogo-sticking effect. If you have one, please share with us in the comment box.

However, your bounce rate can be a quick pointer. Note however that high bounce rate doesn’t necessary indicate high pogo-sticking. A closer look into these two shows some interesting differences.

Pogo-Sticking – How to fix it

The only way to reduce pogo-sticking is to make sure your readers from search engines don’t quickly click back to search engine results page (SERP). To do this, you’ll have to understand what your readers want and write for them.

You can write for your readers while inviting search engines to send you traffic. The best way of course is to treat a topic in its substantial details with less of focus keyword and more of Latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords.

LSI keywords is what helps search engines to quickly link up your articles with searchers. Write for your readers but don’t neglect SEO.

So here are a few things you can do to try to eliminate pogo-sticking

  • Get a premium theme

Readers love a welcoming theme. Fortunately, you don’t need to hurt your wallet in today’s themes market to be able to own one.

If your blog suffers pogo-picking effect because of poor theme, you are really not thinking straight. I think your theme should be the last thing that throws your visitors off.

There are some premium WordPress themes that are worthless too. A lot of things have to come to table when choosing the right theme for your blog. That’s why I always recommend you grab premium themes from the guys of Genesis or MyThemeShop. These have won the confidence and love of their users through high quality products and support services.

Note however that getting the best theme ever does not guarantee any significant reduction in pogo-sticking. Other factors, of course have a place.

  • Post introduction

Your post title is like a door into your article. Once visitors get attracted, they click to discover what’s inside.

Your introduction is the ‘Welcome’  spot. Once they are not properly welcomed, they may feel they are not at the right place. The next thing is a quick turn-back.

Your post introduction should be as important as the title. There must be a perfect correlation or connection between your title, introduction and of course body.

  • Use relevant sub-headlines to hold down skimmers

Many of your readers skim across your content. One of the things that keep them on your content are the headlines.  As they scroll down your page, they quickly read through your headlines to get a general idea of what’s in the content. If you fail to catch their attention through catchy headlines, you stand the risk of pogo-sticking.

  • Use eye-captivating images

One of the things readers cannot escape are beautiful and attractive images. Using relevant and eye-catching, appealing or striking pictures or screenshots on your post will have a positive impact on your blog’s pogo-sticking and bounce rate.

Once someone is attracted to an image, he tends to find out what’s more about it by trying to read the text surrounded it, hence, more time on your blog and a possible Click-through.

  • Avoid misleading titles

The worst thing to do to your blog is to mislead your readers. They will go away and you’re never going to see them around your blog again.

Don’t title your article as a way to lure readers to click. Once they find out your content is completely away from your title, they’ll click back in anger.

  • Avoid popups on PageLoad

Many bloggers use popups these days to capture leads but it’s a stupid error to setup your popup window to pup on PageLoad.

While this quickly drives many readers away, it helps to add to your pogo-sticking. If your popup plugin doesn’t allow you to delay your popup window, you should seriously consider switching to something more professional.

To achieve more results, your window should popup once your reader makes an attempt to leave the page or once a certain position on the page is scrolled to.

An example is, when a reader scrolls to the comment box or simply when the reader spends x minutes on your blog. This helps you capture targeted leads while reducing your pogo-sticking.

If you find your article today on Google page #1 and tomorrow it’s off, you should pay attention to these points I have mentioned. There may be other factors though. However pogo-sticking is one factor you should not neglect.
